    Hey Amber!
    Sounds like you had a great rotation! I have not observed in this setting before, but I saw many clients who were coming to outpatient OT after being discharged from inpatient. We had some similar aspects in regards to rose, bud, and thorn. I too had a great fieldwork educator who pushed me out of my comfort zone and provided great feedback. I also feel like I need more help with documentation and manual muscle testing. I think that this fieldwork was very helpful for seeing what areas we need to hone in on to prepare for level II. Have a great summer break!

    Amber,

    I was at an IPRF for my second Level I placement and our experiences sound very similar! I'm glad you had access to various interventions within the facility. I am also really looking forward to our Older Adult OCP class since now I have some insight on that population. I think MMT and documentation skills will be areas that we continually improve in because I have learned that documentation varies with facilities, populations, settings, etc. and MMT skill comes with more and more practice. I realized that by watching my FWE perform MMT, she knew what the grade was by feel. She didn't have to go through the specifics in her mind of how the grading worked and that made me feel better. I hope you have a wonderful summer break!

Interview Reflection

I think that the mock interview went well overall.  I felt that it was good preparation for interviews in the future.   Although I was nervous, I also felt that I was able to answer most questions well.  I prepared by viewing the resources provided and consolidating a list of possible questions.  I worked on thinking through answers for questions by reminding myself of experiences I have had in school and in fieldwork.  I then had family members help me practice by asking me questions so I could practice giving my responses clearly and confidently. I feel that in a real-life interview situation I will want to do a few things differently.  First, I noticed when watching my interview that I tend to use filler words like "um" often.  I feel like in the future I need to be more aware that I have a tendency to do that and try to correct that habit.  I also found through this that I still need to work on developing my s...

Readiness Check #2

Overall, my glyphs did not change much over the course of the last year.  The two main differences between my glyphs were in the eyelashes and the finishing touch signature.  On the first glyph, I was able to remember each of the five themes based on my personal Clifton StrengthsFinder assessment.  However, I was only able to remember two of the themes for my second glyph.  The second difference in my two glyphs was the finishing touch.  On my original glyph, I signed my name indicating I had a plan or goal about serving in leadership roles in the future.  While that was true at the time, I feel that I do not have as much of a clear plan or goal at this time, which is why I wrote my name in print on the second glyph.  Other than those differences, all other elements remained the same.  I feel that I had an easier time making decisions about my beliefs about leadership this time compared to the first time I drew it.

Occupational Therapy and the NICU

            I listened to a webinar about OT and the NICU.  My interest has always been in pediatrics ever since I decided that I wanted to be an occupational therapist.  I have been curious to know what it is like being an OT working in the NICU.  The OT, Samantha Monahan’s presentation on working in the NICU gave a great overview of what OT in the NICU looks like.              The role of OT in the NICU is to maximize the occupations of the NICU client.  The environment in the NICU is usually very busy with lots of equipment and people.  The NICU can be very chaotic, noisy, and bright.  The OT can help address some of the issues in the environment to help it be more conducive to the NICU client by trying to mimic the womb.  The client can be preemies, newborns who require medical care, or babies withdrawing from medication.  The famil...
